When to plant carrots
Plant carrot seeds directly in the garden during cool weather. Check both your usual last spring frost and the measured soil temperature; your USDA Zone alone cannot provide either one.

Measure soil before sowing
The source says carrots can be sown once soil reaches 40°F and germinate best at 55-65°F. Temperatures above 80°F reduce germination, so the tool does not treat warmer soil as automatically better.

Carrots are normally sown directly where they will grow. This page does not calculate an indoor seed-starting or transplant date.
Planting depth
Plant seed about 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil surface uniformly moist while seedlings establish.
Final spacing
Thin seedlings to 2-3 inches apart, with rows 12-18 inches apart, after plants develop 3-4 true leaves.
Soil structure
Deep, well-drained soil supports root development. Rocky, compacted or heavy soil can contribute to forked roots.
Check both conditions before sowing
A calendar window does not warm the soil. If the planting window has arrived but the soil is still below 40°F, wait and measure again before sowing.
